Can everyone please send me your email address so that we can create a new mailing list? Id like to create a google group for IYBC 09 to discuss any ideas, collaborations, what people can contribute ect. I hardly ever get on tribe anymore and their servers have been nothing but frustrating. I'm sure its discourage a lot of us from getting on here anymore. If you know anyone else that doesn't get on here, please pass the info along so we can keep everyone in the loop. I feel like its time to migrate away from tribe....at least for our discussions ect. Most people use email everyday so it seems like the best idea to me. You guys are all on my facebook, tribe and myspace but i dont have anyone's email address.
Also ticket registration is OPEN! Please make sure to go to www.burningflipside.com/tickets and register then send in the money orders so that people dont have issues getting tickets.

Re: New mailinglist for "Its your Birthday Camp" 09
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 10:53 AMheheheh, great timing, I was just coming out to see if this thing is still on and to post about tickets. Ticket deadlines are as follows:
- Ticket Registration: 12/17/08 – 1/27/09
- Form and Money-Order Mail-In: 1/20/09 – 1/27/09
I'll mail you with my email addesss Josh. What service are you going to use for the email list? It'd be great if it was something similar to Yahoo groups where we could post files and collaborate, although we could use google docs for that, too.
I don't mean to be a stick in the mud or dampen enthusiasm, but I'd strongly prefer to (finally) do a chillout camp this year. Every year, regardless of our theme camp name, we tend to do gravitate towards music, lounging, talking, and eating. Why not "label" ourselves based on what we do best? Having a theme that is more in line with what participants will actually experience when arriving at our camp is important, too, because it will attract people who are interested in a particular experience (chilling with music) instead of folks who'd prefer more of a boisterous celebration that they'd expect at a camp named IYB. Finally, it will allow us to focus on the critical few things we really want to nail and not get bogged down by trying to do too many things at once.
I'd love to take the deco/lights and plush floor space that we had last year to the next level and make our camp an uber-plush and comfy space that people want to lay down in and never leave :-)
What do folks think?
Can't want to see you all!

Re: New mailinglist for "Its your Birthday Camp" 09
Thu, December 25, 2008 - 9:20 PMThere are a lot of reasons i think we should stick with the IYBC idea.
1. Doing *just* a regular chillout camp is unoriginal. Lots of people have a lounge type area with music but its that extra something that makes it special and attracts people to it. If its just some other chill camp it doesn't stand out nor does it inspire creativity from those of us that DO want to do something more.
2. Doing IYBC again doesn't stop the chill/lounge idea plus gives those of us that were having a blast doing the creek activities the opportunity to do it. So its more of a win win situation for everyone involved. I know those of us that participated in the Warrior Sperm Joust had a blast doing it! It was probably the funnest thing i ever did at flipside. Having the womb still gave those of us that wanted to make a chill lounge spot gave us that opportunity as well. In fact i would say the Birthday idea attracted lots of people.
3. We friggin got sarinated for God's sake last year! When has that ever happened to us? That was awesome :)
4. I like attracting boisterous people and not all of us are the quiet types...especially at flipside. I thought we attracted a good group of diverse freaks that flipside theme camps are all about attracting.
5. A lot of people wanted to do it again this year.
6. Giving it the birthday theme gives us something conceptual to work with. It inspires creativity rather then just an ubiquitous entity to work around.
7. The Slip n Snatch will be so much better this year now that i know what to expect. SO many people wanted to be born again and its not something i want to give up on. It just needs some tweaking and a revamp that I'm positive will get unforgettable results from. I cant let the community down on this one especially.
8. The birthday theme and having creek activities is what gave us that prime camp placement last year. Considering how hot it was last year and how hot it will probably be this year, being by the creek was choice. Id like to get the same spot again. That was also another reason it attracted people because of the traffic right by our camp.
9. Theme camps dont have to have regulated rules and proper labels. I dont think that just the label proposition is strong enough against the other reasons that support doing something more fun and cognitive like IYBC.
10. As for what we do best...We're all different kinds of people and the camp has been growing a lot since it started. I think we're all good at a lot of different things but I got tons of reactions from IYBC idea, the vagina slide and the sperm joust to know that it was something very memorable for other people in the community.I got more reactions from this idea then ANY other theme camp we've ever done together. Chill camps are a dime a dozen at burner events. I would rather our camp stand out in such a way that people remember it for its originality and thought rather then just another spot to pass out and get your balls painted. As much as people enjoyed the chill area, tons of people also enjoyed the creek activities too! We had EVERYONE's attention during the sperm jousts and the few births that we did give to people.
11. During the day most of us will probably be at the creek. Because of this, doing creek activities (where everyone else is as well) can attract attention to our camp and provides us with something to do during the day. It freed us at night from responsibilities rather then having to have something going all night because we're a music/lounge camp and thats what we're supposed to do kinda thing.
12. the amount of "Happy Birthday!!!" we got from people passing by.
I thought that the collaboration between the creek activities and womb were great last year. The placement, original idea, and name attracted a lot of people and the work on the space from shade structure, sperm pillows, birthday party deco, sound, mixing, food ect were all stellar. Everyone did their part. I think that a "womb" is probably the most chill space ever. Seriously is anything more comfortable and home then a womb? It also gives us something cognitive to work with when getting deco ideas. So does the birthday party theme. I noticed how it resonated with lots of people wanting a place to feel like it was their birthday and we did that. Bill if you prefer to focus your efforts on making the chill space then go for it, but i dont see why we should ditch such a great idea that made so many people happy just for the reason of fitting a label. IMHO labels dont attract people, original fun ideas do. We all got to do what we wanted, felt comfortable with and was good at. Why change something that works? Those of us that want to setup shade structure, work on chill deco, spin music and cook can do that. Those of us that want to create vagina slides, shenanigans at the creek, games, competitions and interact with people can do that. I dont see why it all cant coexist. I thought the reactions we got last year were priceless. We really made our mark on the community. Everyone knew who our camp was. Id like to continue the tradition. I thought it rocked. -

Re: New mailinglist for "Its your Birthday Camp" 09
Fri, December 26, 2008 - 1:01 PMYou’re obviously passionate about this idea Josh and that’s great. I’m not, but that’s OK. The most important thing for me about FS is reconnecting with my friends, regardless of our theme camp name. Ultimately, I’ll go with the flow, but I think you’re mis-understanding my point about “labels.” First I’ll provide some context…
My fondest memories of last year were sitting in our space, chilling, talking, and listening to music. The folks that I saw post to the austin-list or tribe that sang our praises said the same thing. One memorable post was from a first-timer who spoke about how comfortable our space and our vibe made them. Regardless of the name of our theme camp or chill space, it was the relaxed, accepting, chill vibe that elicited these reactions.
With that context, what I’m saying is that I’d like to attract more people who are interested in that same vibe. The name of our theme camp and description of it is one of the main factors that will set participants’ expectations and help them determine if they want to stop by our camp. If we have a theme that oozes chillaxing, we are going to attract people that want to chill. Further, regardless of the name of our theme camp was last year, the majority of activities at the camp itself were focused on relaxing, conversation, music, etc. not IYB related celebrations. Having a description that accurately matches the reality that participants experience at a camp would be nice.
Secondly, doing a chill camp doesn’t have to be unoriginal or “just a chill camp.” We should definitely have a unique theme to rally around and inspire us – I’d just prefer one that is centered around relaxation and conversation than birthday celebration. We can go in any number of artistic directions with this.
Thirdly, and I bring up this point delicately, we need to be realistic about what we can pull off given everyone’s other commitments, focus our energy on the handful of things we want to do really well, and ignore the rest. You are a creative genius, Josh, but if we can avoid diverting our focus with too many ideas / loosely related creative concepts, I feel strongly we can make the ones we do actually implement that much better.
I feel confident that we can get the same or a similar spot as last year with a different theme camp name, especially based on our community contributions in past years, including last year.
As I’m writing this, I thought of an idea that might satisfy everyone… How about we name our camp “The Chill Womb” (and describe it as a chill space in the theme camp directory, FS website, etc.) and “It’s Your Birthday” is an art installation at the creek (with vagina slide, sperm jousts, etc) that is one of our camp's artistic contributions? I think that will be the best way for the 2 concepts to coexist.
What does everyone else think? (I’ll cross-post this on the email list, too)

Re: New mailinglist for "Its your Birthday Camp" 09
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 10:20 PMGrant and I will have to be sideline and hear stories this year...who knows??? Maybe we will be calling with the news of a new being arriving during that weekend since that is when we are due!! Ah...
Have a blast...and if any can come by and visit us before or after Flipside, we would LOVE to see and/or hear from you all!!!
So much love...
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE...
This would have been year 5 for me =( poey! Just going to be a different year!
We will be thinking of you all as the planning progresses~
Have fun and enjoy whatever you all decide to do for this year!
And regards to the possible theme change...
Maybe this would be a good time for all the FOOD campers to post here what their feelings are about how they personally feel the purpose of the camp is for themselves...what kind of vibe, energy, purpose, goals, and vision each one sees or hopes to feel in the camp "home".
And remember it is "HOME" for those few days for each one of you each year. A special refuge...a "portable living room" if you will =) with kitchen and sound system and comforts we like to provide for our sweet family!!!!
Chose the best aspects of what the majority of the family wants to be in for the weekend...
And have a wonderful time! have fun planning! Have fun decorating! Have fun with the whole experience!
Love you all!!!! =)
